Tip: Allergy relief, homemade

Everyone around me is plaqued by allergies here on Long Island. Some never bothered before by seasonal allergies until this May, 2023. Our youngest, Evan (8) is experiencing the worst of it. I was going to head to the local pharmacy to pick up some holistic allergy relief, but remembered I had stinging nettle leaf in my cubbard.

I love nettle. As a comforting cup of hot tea, or iced, or even as a natural diuretic. I have relied on nettle, often. It’s known to help with hair loss, aide in weight loss and boost immunity overall. Today I remembered reading about the potent efficacy it also holds in relieving allergies. So, I brewed a pot. And viola! Homemade medicine. Here’s a pub med article in support as well.

I gently boil filtered spring water, and then add 5-6 teaspoons of dried nettle leaf. Once it boils again gently, I shut off the heat and let the tea steep for 15-20 minutes. The longer, the stronger.

I added a touch of sugar, since for my son. I prefer the earthiness, him not so much, but less than a teaspoon. I added a few squirts of honey from Lidl I had on hand, but raw organic from a local market is usully the route I go. Slices of lemon added, shake and chill, or leave room temperature. I usually refrigerate. I gave my son a medicine cup full and now we wait for the relief. I’ll give home another shot before bed. We wait and welcome June, and less pollen. ✨
